Stroud Says He Has Fulfilled His End as Extension Talks Loom
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud said Thursday he believes he has done his part to merit a contract extension, leaving the business details to his representation while he concentrates on football. “I let my agent handle that. If it’s time to do it, then it is. My job is football,” Stroud said at the Texans’ organized team activities, as reported by ESPN. “I think I’ve held my bargain up. Whatever happens, happens.”
The remarks come as Stroud becomes extension-eligible following two seasons that delivered consistent team success but raised questions about his individual ceiling. In 2023, his rookie year, he earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl selection after posting 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 100.8 passer rating across 15 regular-season games, helping Houston win the AFC South at 10-7 and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The 2024 season brought another division title and a second consecutive 10-win campaign, though his passer rating dropped to 87.0 with 12 interceptions. Last season, playing 14 regular-season games, he threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 92.9 rating as Houston again won the AFC South and finished 12-5. The Texans were eliminated in the divisional round in each of the three seasons, including a four-interception performance by Stroud against the New England Patriots in the most recent playoff exit.
The contract market for quarterbacks of comparable draft pedigree sets a demanding benchmark. Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love each carry average annual values reported at $55 million, figures that place them alongside Josh Allen and Joe Burrow at the top of the position’s pay scale. Brock Purdy and Jared Goff are reported at $53 million per year. The Texans selected Stroud second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State and exercised his fifth-year option for the 2027 season in April.
“I am a motivated person regardless. Of course, it helps,” Stroud said of the repeated playoff exits. “I have learned to let failures and successes go quickly.” Whether the Texans move quickly on an extension or allow the situation to develop through the season remains an open question, with the exercised fifth-year option providing the franchise a measure of leverage as negotiations proceed.
