Hot mic captures explicit remark during Texas softball's Super Regional clincher
An unidentified male voice was picked up by ESPN microphones directing an obscene remark at listeners during Texas’s 5-0 victory over Arizona State on Sunday, which secured the second-ranked Longhorns a berth in the Women’s College World Series out of the Austin Super Regional. The broadcast continued without interruption, with play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown pressing on through the incident without acknowledging it.
The hot mic moment occurred shortly after Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan moved ahead 1-0 in her count against an Arizona State batter. The voice, which appeared to whisper before the remark became audible, was not attributed to any identified participant in the broadcast or on the field. Brown, speaking at the time about Arizona State manager Megan Bartlett’s record of developing assistant coaches, gave no indication on air that anything unusual had occurred.
The incident was not the only notable off-field development surrounding the tournament weekend. During Texas Tech’s regional game against Florida, former NBA player Jason Williams was ejected following a celebration after his daughter Mia, a Red Raiders infielder, hit a two-run home run against her former team.
Texas will open Women’s College World Series play against Tennessee on Thursday in the double-elimination round of the tournament.
